Ibeka: Capacity and equity building through microhydro power

About 32,000 villages in Indonesia still do not have access to electricity. Fortunately, Indonesia is blessed with abundant sources of renewable energy. Ibeka builds small hydro power plants as an entry point for community development acitivities. This provides access to an affordable electricity supply for rural communities and facilitates the community’s capacity building based on their local resources. To date Ibeka has provided access to electricity to more than 300,000 people. Additional income for the communities is generated by selling electricity making it a sustainable model.

Providing rural people access to electricity, clean water supply, energy efficient stoves and economic activities. The village is empowered and the forests and environment are safeguarded. At the community level, children are educated on environment conservation and women can contribute more income for the family. Up until now IBEKA has provided access to electricity to more than 300,000 people and have supported more than 30,000 people to increase their revenues.

Poor farmers earning less than 1 Euro a day. Children (ages from elementary to high school), men and women of all ages benefit from having access to electricity. Women and children no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water and collect fire wood for cooking. Engineers and technicians can improve their skills through training.

If the community can generate income from; electricity sales, sales of agriculture products, butterfly breeding, they can become a sustainable community with improved health status, higher school enrollment ratios, high education status and better environmental condition.

Our model is community owned/community based approach. The facility will be owned by the community and maintained by the community. IBEKA is famous for empowering communities through building infrastructure to improve the living conditions for the community, so preparing the community socially is a very important step of our development approach.

Our projects are tangible, easy to replicate as long as the community involvement is in the core of the development process which involves training, internship, on the job training and ownership.
